Batman review - Nintendo Gameboy

Read Original Review PDF for Batman

The caped crusader appears on the console scene once again, but in a totally different form from his previous incarnations.

This game is reminiscent of Super Marioland, as Batman jumps and shoots his way through the platform world. Along the way our nocturnal friend is molested by thugs, robots, and the Joker himself. There's even a Batwing section in which the Dark Knight shoots down 'copters. Don't forget to grab all the power-ups you can - you'll need them!

" Another great Gameboy platform game, with a real sense of humour - the main sprite is hilarious! Not only that, but the play is superb; the locations all have a distinctive look, and the array of tokens to be collected makes for difficult decisions - so much the better! "

" I like this a lot - it's sort of Super Marioland with guns! Marioland and Batman are very similar in appearance, but there's more variety in this. The graphics are excellent, and the gameplay is both challenging and addictive, and there are plenty of different weapons to try out. Highly recommended. "

If my memory serves correctly, I think that Batman games (in general) have been blessed in a way that they (normally) traverse into pretty decent games and this effort does not do any harm in disrupting the conversion tradition.

There's good music and level layouts and also Batman himself is very well drawn (and agile too - given that he can jump around like a madman if you choose to).

The addition of smooth scrolling really made this title stand out in the early days of the Gameboy. I am not sure how this did in terms of sales but I wouldn't be surprised if it bombed as it was up against the mighty Super Mario Land (then again this was released after of the original Batman film).

MM staff was right to comment that this was in a similar vein as SML and that is no means a bad thing - there is really nothing major to fault about this game and the fact this came out quite early on the launch of the GB made it a bench mark to follow on from.

As we all know, movie game conversions are almost becoming compulsory in today's multi million £/$ climate of commercialism. Companies like Sunsoft (who are now a shadow of the company which was once was) are no longer willing to pay huge amounts of cash for this leaving the big fish to snap up what they please.

Overall, a decent attempt at offering an alternative choice for platform fans in the infant days of the Gameboy.
