About the Nintendo Gameboy

First released in 1989, the Gameboy line is the biggest selling in the history of consoles. Designed by the late Gunpei Yokoi, the machine faced more powerful competition in the early 90's in the form of Atari's Lynx, NEC's PC Engine GT and Sega's GameGear (all of which featured backlit colour screens) and beat them all - thanks to the face that the machine was portable, cheap and didn't guzzle batteries.

Nintendo ported many well-known franchises to the machine, such as Mario, Zelda and Metroid, but the success of the handheld can be traced back to one game - Tetris. It was the ultimate killer app. Bundled free with the Gameboy, this is the puzzle game to end all puzzle games, and is widely regarded by many as the great videogame of all time.

The Gameboy brand is still going strong. After the original black and white machine, Nintendo released the Gameboy Color, which was pretty much the same console but with limited colour support. Then came the Gameboy Advance, which is pretty much a pocket-sized SNES.
