About the Sega Megadrive
The Sega Mega Drive was released in Japan (1988), Europe (1990) and most of the rest of the world. It debuted under the name Sega Genesis in North America (1989), as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region.
A powerhouse of a machine that bore witness to some of the best 16-bit games ever, the Megadrive is a real gem of a console. Although the SNES had the power, the Megadrive had the speed, thanks to a faster CPU and this resulted in many games (mostly shooters) looking better than anything the SNES could muster. Talking of speed, the Megadrive was the first machine to feature Sega's mascot - Sonic.
The console remains Sega's only real success - and they still nearly threw it all away with ill-fated add-ons like the Mega-CD and the 32X. Thankfully there are enough decent games to make even the most casual Sega fan forget these mistakes. Sega's arcade conversions were nothing short of stunning.
